WINCHESTER, Va. — In a joint partnership, NW Works Inc. was awarded grant funding by the Foundation for Children with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and the Northern Shenandoah Valley Civitan Club. The Foundation awards funding tri-annually to organizations that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“As a representative of The Northern Shenandoah Valley Civitan Club and the Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, we are honored to assist NW Works with the purchase of this new 2020 Nissan 12-passenger van for $37,615,” said Gwen Carter, the president of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Civitan Club.

NW Works provides safe, comfortable, and reliable transportation for clients, allowing them to go on social outings and get to their job placements on a daily basis.

“Transportation is a common barrier to employment for our clients.  Being able to provide additional transportation to and from NW Works or other partner job placement locations is a huge opportunity for our business our business partners and especially for the clients that are able to work and earn a paycheck due to the impact of the partnership with the Northern Shenandoah Civitan Club,” said Debera Taylor, the President and CEO of NW Works. “Having reliable transportation that will allow our clients and staff the opportunity to partner with and be engaged in the community and other non-profits in the city is a win-win for everyone.”

‘Oh, not just a van – I need a new van,’ – NW Works client Nick Bainger

This is the first new van the company has purchased since 2003 and it will have a major impact for NW Works’ social day program.

“With all of the work sites NW Works works with, it’s hard to get a large group of our clients out,” said Justine Dalrymple, a Day Program Coordinator at NW Works. “With this van, we’ll be able to take larger groups of our clients at a time. When we as staff get asked when the next time we can go on an outing is, we won’t have to say that we’ll have to reserve a van. We’ll be able to plan the outing and go on it.”

WDVM 25’s Rebecca Burnett covered the check presentation and interviewed our client Nick Bainger, who played an integral role in winning the grant. That interview can be watched on WDVM’s website, or by clicking on the embedded article below.
